Have you ever dreamt of becoming an expert in instrument flight and sharing that knowledge with aspiring pilots? The Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) rating empowers you to do just that. At TFA Flight Academy, we offer a comprehensive CFII program designed to equip you with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to excel as an instrument flight instructor.

What is a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)?

A CFII is an FAA-authorized flight instructor qualified to teach pilots how to fly safely and efficiently under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) conditions. CFII instructors play a vital role in developing the instrument proficiency of pilots, enabling them to navigate through clouds and low visibility situations using solely instruments and avionics systems. As a CFII, you'll be responsible for:

·         Advanced Instrument Training: Instructing pilots on complex instrument procedures, navigation techniques, and emergency procedures in simulated and actual IFR conditions.

·         Safety Focus: Instilling a culture of safety and risk management in your students, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and knowledge for safe instrument flight.

·         Effective Instruction: Utilizing proven instructional methods to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment for your students, fostering their understanding of instrument flight principles.

Why Become a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)?

A CFII rating unlocks exciting career opportunities and personal satisfaction:

·         Demand in Aviation: CFII instructors are highly sought-after by flight schools, independent instructors, and airlines looking to train their pilots for instrument proficiency.

·         Rewarding Career: Experience the gratification of guiding students through their instrument training journey, witnessing their transformation into confident and competent IFR pilots.

·         Enhanced Expertise: Deepen your own understanding of instrument flight procedures and regulations, further solidifying your piloting skills.

·         Career Advancement: A CFII rating serves as a stepping stone towards other aviation careers such as airline pilot, corporate pilot, or air charter pilot.

·         Global Opportunities: Instrument flight proficiency is increasingly important for pilots worldwide, potentially opening doors to international flight instruction opportunities.

What You'll Gain in Our CFII Program:

Our CFII program goes beyond simply teaching you how to instruct instrument flight. It refines your own instrument proficiency and equips you with the pedagogical skills to effectively guide your students:

·         Advanced Instrument Procedures: Master complex instrument approaches, enroute navigation techniques, and holding procedures, ensuring you possess in-depth knowledge to instruct at an advanced level.

·         CFII Techniques and Procedures: Learn proven instructional methods specifically tailored for instrument flight training, including lesson planning, effective communication, and student evaluation techniques in simulated and actual IFR conditions.

·         Human Factors in Instrument Flight: Gain insights into the psychological and physiological aspects that can impact pilot performance during instrument flight, allowing you to better understand and address student challenges.

·         Safety Management in Instrument Flight: Sharpen your skills in risk assessment, emergency procedures, and crew resource management (CRM) to instill a safety-first mindset in your students.

The Path to Your CFII Rating:

The CFII program combines intensive ground school instruction with specialized flight training conducted by experienced Designated Flight Examiners (DFEs).

·         Ground School: Our in-depth ground school curriculum delves into advanced instrument flight theory, FAA regulations pertaining to CFII instruction, and effective instructional techniques for the instrument rating. Experienced instructors guide you through the intricacies of CFII duties, ensuring you possess a comprehensive understanding of the role.

·         Flight Training: Put theory into practice with specialized flight training under the close supervision of DFEs. You'll gain experience in various aircraft types equipped with advanced avionics systems, hone your instrument proficiency, and refine your ability to instruct students in complex instrument procedures. During flight training, you'll receive valuable feedback on your instructional techniques and communication skills.

FAA Requirements and Minimums for CFII:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) outlines the eligibility and experience requirements for obtaining a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) rating in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) Part 61. Here's a breakdown of the key criteria:

Eligibility:

·         Hold a valid Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with an airplane category and single-engine class rating (or another aircraft category and class rating appropriate for the instructor certificate sought).

·         Hold a valid Instrument Rating for the aircraft category and class for which you are seeking CFII certification.

·         Be at least 18 years of age.

·         Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If you have a medical condition that prevents this, the FAA may issue a CFII certificate with limitations.

Aeronautical Knowledge:

·         Pass a written knowledge test administered by an FAA-authorized examiner. The test covers advanced instrument flight procedures, CFII methods and techniques, FAA regulations pertaining to instrument flight instruction, and the specific aircraft category and class for which you are seeking CFII certification.

Flight Experience:

·         Log a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time as a pilot, of which:

o    At least 500 hours must be in cross-country flight of which 100 hours must be as Pilot in Command (PIC) in airplanes.

·         Flight Instruction:

o    Receive a minimum of 10 hours of flight training from an authorized CFII instructor towards the CFII certificate. This training must include:

§  Methods, techniques, and procedures of instrument flight instruction.

§  Instrument flight procedures applicable to the CFII certificate sought.

§  Preparation for the CFII practical test.

·         Flight Instructor Endorsements: In addition to flight training, you will need endorsements from an authorized CFI for specific flight instructor privileges, such as:

o    Fundamentals of Instruction

o    Instrument Airplane

Medical Certification:

·         You must hold a valid second-class medical certificate from an FAA-authorized medical examiner.

Practical Test:

Upon meeting the knowledge and experience requirements, you will be eligible to take a practical test with an FAA-designated examiner (DPE). The practical test is designed to assess your ability to effectively perform the following tasks:

·         Oral Examination: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of advanced instrument flight procedures, CFII methods and techniques, FAA regulations pertaining to instrument flight instruction, and the specific aircraft category and class for which you are seeking CFII certification.

·         Flight Instruction Demonstration: Conduct an instrument flight training session with the DPE acting as the student. The DFE will evaluate your ability to plan, execute, and debrief the lesson effectively, ensuring you cover the planned learning objectives, utilize proper instructional techniques, and demonstrate sound risk management practices.

Additional Considerations:

·         Currency Requirements: To maintain your CFII certificate currency, you must perform specific activities within specified timeframes. These activities may include flight time as a CFII, flight instruction endorsements renewed, and attending approved CFII workshops. We will provide you with detailed information about currency requirements.

By successfully completing the CFII program at TFA Flight Academy and meeting all FAA requirements, you'll be well-equipped to embark on a rewarding career as a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, shaping the future of instrument-rated pilots and fostering a new generation of safe and proficient aviators.
